- What is your company’s mission statement?
- What are the most common issues that your consumers have?
- Describe your company’s selling points in five lines or fewer.
Content surveys, let’s face it, are a no-brainer.
2. Pose a question
It may seem obvious, and it may even make you want to whack yourself in the head and yell, “Doh!” in a Homer-esque manner, but asking the correct questions of your customers can help you generate the finest content for them.
It’s OK if you’re not an expert, but it’s also your responsibility to meet with specialists (clients) to get the necessary knowledge. “Because you’re the expert, could you perhaps inject some of your knowledge into this blog post?” simply explain. Most of the time, they will cheerfully comply.
3. Use Google as if you’re a king
We’ve all had a conversation with a colleague that went something like this:
“I’m not sure what X means?” says Person A.
“Did you Google it?” says Person B.
“…”, says Person A.

Because we are unfamiliar with the industry we are writing about 90% of the time, do your study and Google like a king. It’s reasonable to suggest that for every new customer you write about, you should spend at least an hour researching the industry (through Google). Your material will immediately resonate once you can sound like an authority.
4. Stand atop Giants’ Shoulders
Clients you write for didn’t always have the information you provide them, and believe it or not, they still don’t know all there is to know about the sector. That’s why it’s critical to stand on the shoulders of giants (and this isn’t a joke); depend on individuals who are thought leaders in the field you’re writing about. They are, after all, the experts.
You may acquire first-hand insight into topics even the company owners you’re writing for may not be aware of by reading articles and e-books they’ve authored. This will not only improve the quality of your writing, but it will also make you a better writer.
Understanding the sector you’re writing for is one of the most challenging components of content marketing to undertake. After all, if we all wrote for businesses we knew about, all of the material would be about sports and celebrity gossip.
