Then you’ll go to your content report and separate it by organic traffic.

You’ll need to sort by pageviews from here.

The next step is to do a Comparison Analysis using average time on page versus pageviews.

Take a look at the sites that had the most organic traffic in 2015.

Take note of which ones have a longer than usual session length, how they rank, and whether or not they really deserve to be ranked (these might be a low tier 2 page with little onsite love).

Run the same test again, but this time adjust the date to July 2016.

You’ll probably see that a large percentage of your pages with above-average time on page and no extra onsite love have improved in ranking.

Run this over numerous domains; I did, and the data from eight sites all pointed to the same conclusion: Google’s machine learning skills can detect websites that scored high in 2015 but had no meaningful reason to do so other than that people spent more time on them.

This means that Google rewards longer session durations with better rankings.

In fact, apart from the home page, most of the sites that scored highly in my own experiment revealed that pages with the longest session durations also received the greatest organic traffic.

Just be sure they’re not gateway sites that lead to a different landing page.
