“May the Fourth” be with you – Star Wars fans look forward to reciting this phrase on May 4th, which is usually a joyous day. But, sadly, Google decided to throw a wrench in the works…like an AT-AT walker knocking on your door. 



On May 4, Google’s Danny Sullivan stated that the company’s basic search algorithm would be updated for the second time this year. The “May 2020 Core Update” is what it’s named. There are no charming creatures to envisage, no entertaining names – just the facts.

The May 2020 Core Update Revealed

The last upgrade to the core algorithm was issued in January. However, the world, as well as search, has changed dramatically since then. 

Despite the fact that it will take roughly two weeks to completely roll out, we can clearly tell that this current Core Update is rather significant. With global volatility at an all-time high, the latest Google Core Update seems to be bringing unparalleled SERP instability. Here’s some information from the SEMrush Sensor: 


On May 6, practically every category exhibited peaked volatility rates ranging from 9 to 9.4 points, although the core update in January only resulted in an average volatility of 8 points. As a result, the May core upgrade looks to be considerably stronger, affecting a greater number of SERPs and positions.

Something to keep in mind with these updates is that you should wait for them to finish before worrying. 

Who Will Win and Who Will Lose the May 2020 Core Update?

Keep in mind that wide fundamental algorithm adjustments are intended to cause visible changes in search results across all nations and languages, but the SERPs have champions and losers. 

When a major upgrade is completely implemented, certain ranking dips and gains are unavoidable. Certainly, we anticipate to observe a major drop in user inquiries relating to travel, tourism, live events, and other such topics during the epidemic. With the help of SEMrush Sensor, we compared the average volatility value 7 days before and 2 days after the Update announcement. And, the most influenced categories are Travel, Real Estate, Health, Pets & Animals, and People & Society. This is true across both desktop and mobile searches.

We also saw that several large domains were heavily impacted. Around half of all big ranking adjustments in the United States happen on websites with more than one million monthly visitors.


Winners of the SERPs

With this modification, (an obituary site) improved its ranking (+13 ranks on average) and popularity. The News industry, on the other hand, is by far the largest winner.


With everyone’s continual focus on the news in recent months, several media sources have attracted unrivaled user attention. However, it looks that whatever they’re doing is working, since they’ve been rewarded in this update.

In the business sector, it was intriguing to see PR sources acquire substantial ranking momentum – sites like Businesswire, PR Newswire, and GlobeNewswire each gained 50+ spots. 

Losers in the SERPs

Clearly, the offline entertainment business has taken a blow, and tragically, so have the websites that were associated with it as a result of this upgrade. Eventbrite, the “it-place” for individuals looking for offline entertainment, has dropped 44 spots.

What’s the Deal with LinkedIn?

LinkedIn did drop out of the SERPs for a brief time and had some significant drops, but this had nothing to do with the core change. Many people have made mistakes, but probably not on a site as vast as this. 🙂

So, what’s next? 

If you’re unsure how to get through this tempest, Google’s update rules remain unchanged (we recommend you read them). 

In a nutshell, Google’s philosophy has always been that there isn’t much you can do about algorithm updates and changes in ranks but continually enhancing the quality of your material. “They’re aimed to guarantee that overall, we’re delivering on our objective to display relevant and authoritative material to searchers,” Google said of the fundamental improvements.
