The “top news stories of 2018” is a special edition of the Google News Digest that will be released on December 31st. The issue will include the top 10 most popular stories from 2018.

Over the last year, we’ve collected Google news to offer you the most up-to-date information on search, advertisements, and related tools and initiatives. It’s time to take stock, not just because the year is coming to a conclusion, but also because Google is turning 20. In 2004, the search engine behemoth went public for the seventh time.

You may be wondering how you can go through all of Google’s news, updates, and modifications to get the most crucial information (and at first, so did we). However, after much research, we were able to narrow it down to three broad categories and pertinent issues to share with you in our bi-monthly digests.

So, let’s take a look back at the Google news that made headlines in 2018 and had the largest impact on our collective digital world!


SEARCH NEWS ON GOOGLE

1. The Mobile-First Index is Now Available

In March, Google started rolling out its mobile-first indexing for additional sites, after intensive testing and research. The majority of websites are now indexed and ranked using the company’s mobile-first policy.

In 2019, food for thought: It should come as no surprise that mobile search is king. It’s time to become real and friendly with mobile for those who have stayed dubious or procrastinated.

2. Improved Page Speed

If you had any questions about the importance of page speed before, this year should have dispelled them. In January 2018, Google officially revealed that page speed is a ranking factor for mobile searches. Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool has been improved to make your work simpler. Those who do not have the time or resources to improve their site’s page speed need not lose faith; according to Google, as long as you produce high-quality, relevant material, you will always have a chance to rank in the SERPs.

In 2019, consider this: You should continue to improve your website speed!

3. A New Year of Life, with a New SERP

Whether you like it or not, the new SERP design for desktop is now live. It has a more rounded Google search bar and a sticky header, but that isn’t all that 2019 has in store. We picked to highlight a few of the most prominent changes to its SERP design, functionality, and formats among the many that have been made:

Google’s Hotel (and Air Fare) Search results were totally redesigned this year. It’s not only about a fresh appearance. Search criteria such as price range, needed amenities, date range, reviews, and more may be used to rearrange and rank the interface. The Explore Map also shows how costs for popular vacation locations fluctuate over time, making it simpler to locate airfare and hotel offers.

Google is still testing a new tool that pinpoints certain material from a website, such as FAQs, Q&As, and how-tos, and brings it straight to the search results for a better user experience.

4. Google Ads, a rebranded AdWords with a new interface and more, is now available.

Google’s basic tools, such as the Search Console, have been updated. So far, what have been the most significant changes? More reports, improved filters, and a longer data storage term – 7 days, 28 days, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, or 16 months – are all available in the new Search Console.

The Funnel Analysis feature (which helps you better understand the user’s journey that leads to completing actions on your site) and the Segment Overlap technique (which allows you to track how segments intersect with one another) should be your top tries when it comes to Advanced Analytics features within the Google Analytics 360.

In this scenario, I can only depend on what Google says: owing to the launch of new tools and capabilities, they promised a more complete and data-driven overview of the client journey and their contact with your site.

7. An Impressive Duplex Introduction

When customers are looking for something on the web and need to get things done, a new Google Assistant function powered by Google Duplex is designed to help them. Duplex will make calls and set appointments on your behalf, and no one will be able to tell the difference, according to the company.

In 2019, consider this: While your dating life may become a lot simpler, corporate secretaries may be on the verge of losing their employment.

8. HTTP – No Longer Secure

Security worries dominated the IT sector in 2018, which is a fair assessment. Google Chrome, meantime, has launched version 68. It now considers all HTTP sites to be “not secure” and flags them as such.

In 2019, consider switching to HTTPS if you don’t want your visitors to see the “not secure” indicator on your website.

9. Remember Google +, Inbox, Google Hangouts “Classic,” and Allo.

And, as more focus is placed on automation, machine learning, AI, and other similar technologies, we may anticipate even more services to be phased out. But that’s OK, because Google has always been about trials and experiments – some of them worked and others didn’t, and that’s how it works.

Just a few weeks ago, I’d told you that Dragonfly, a Google project specifically designed for China, is well underway, with the search engine being modified to work in accordance with local law and political realities. But, despite a large public outcry and several internal debates, its future remains uncertain. I’m guessing 2019 will shed some light on the situation.
