Despite the fact that Webinomy’s Backlink Analytics tool is one of the company’s oldest products, we have to acknowledge that it may have been the weakest link in our SEO toolset. We recognized we needed to step up our game, so we set out to change the status quo about a year and a half ago.

Backlink Database That Has Been Completely Renovated


We wanted to significantly increase the quality of our backlink data. There was no way around it; our data-gathering process had to be completely overhauled. To concentrate on our final objective, we placed all other backlink features on hold and created a long list of improvements to our backlink data supply to customers.

The way was clear, and all we had to do now was focus on ticking things off our to-do list.

Organizing the Overhaul

We won’t get into the technical intricacies of the upgrade of our backlink database, but here’s a basic synopsis of what was done:

Crawler. We chose to redesign our crawler from the ground up after thoroughly studying the shortcomings and limitations of the previous architecture. And so we did; we devised a whole new strategy to data collection.

The line is crawling. Our new crawler’s initial testing indicated that its request queue couldn’t handle the volume of data it was currently gathering. We attempted expanding hardware capabilities to solve the problem, but it wasn’t enough, so we designed a more efficient crawling queue.

Seeding. We queued up all of the URLs from Google’s Top 100 for 450 million keywords from our Organic Research tool to give a quality first seeding for our crawler; this insured that our database was relevant from the start.

Storage. We had to triple the capacity of our server to accommodate the increased data collecting.

Taking Stock of Our Progress

To determine our precise position as a backlink source, we compared ourselves to the best: Majestic, Ahrefs, and Moz.

In a moment, we’ll go through the process. First, let’s take a look at how far we’ve come in the last six months. Looking at the relationship between the four most popular SEO tools, it’s clear that we’ve made significant progress.

How Did We Make the Comparison?

It was difficult to come up with a system that was both obvious and fair.

You can always identify sites that will highlight your backlink tool, which is why we chose a random selection of 100 domains (out of 100,000) for each month to demonstrate how the finalists performed over the previous six months.

For each of the 100 domains, we looked at the number of referring domains and the overall number of backlinks each candidate had.

We next compared the ratio of Webinomy findings to the results of our rivals for each domain in the test sample. As a result, if the ratio is less than 1, the Webinomy database has fewer data for the test domain. A ratio larger than one indicates the number of times the Webinomy result was surpassed.

We computed the median of all outcomes to arrive at the final score.

This was followed by a flood of favorable communications, culminating in Gregg Lee’s announcement that Brian Dean had verified and authorized our database expansion.

Of course, we’ve received some criticism as well. Russ Jones asserted that his own studies will prove us incorrect.

He altered his opinion after some back and forth. However, we must disagree with it.

“Comparing link indexes correctly is no simple job,” Russ says.

That is entirely correct. To begin with, obtaining a genuinely random sample of domains is a vital and difficult component of comparing quality backlink indexes. We like Russ’s methods in his paper; it’s a really useful resource. However, we disagree with how he evaluates and compares the indexes themselves.

He only indicates the possibility of one index having more data than the other using his approach. It doesn’t say how much additional data there is, therefore the approach can’t be utilized for a true comparison (if your goal is to find out which index has more data).

The following are some instances of why this is so. 

1st example:

Let’s imagine we have backlink indexes for Contestant 1 (C1) and Contestant 2 (C2) (C2). 

When a sample of 12 domains is compared, C2 comes out on top every time:


C2 is the undisputed champion, according to Russ’s viewpoint. However, the difference between indexes is just 0.1 percent, indicating that the C2 and C1 indices are almost identical. 

Explanation 2:

Let’s assume the comparison reveals that C2 has 9 victories and C1 has 3 wins out of a sample of 12 domains:


C2 is 3 times larger than C1 in this case, according to Russ’s method. However, looking at the actual index sizes, you can see that the indexes are almost identical for 75% of the sample domains (0.1% difference), while C1 has a full triumph for 25%. (C2 has no data). In this case, C1 has a higher backlink index.

These are extreme instances, but they demonstrate the approach’s weaknesses. You can’t say one backlink index is more valuable for SEO than another without understanding how much data there is.

Because we calculated the median using the real numbers of referring domains and backlinks, our comparison algorithm recognizes this.

Russ generously supplied the sample he used in his study so that we could double-check it. The outcomes were strikingly comparable to those reported in our study.


In terms of the amount of backlinks, this graph paints a quite different image from the one offered by Russ in his study.

We also used the first domain ( from Russ’s example and ran it through the Webinomy and Moz interfaces. 

The figures were not the same as those reported by Russ.

Anyway, we wanted to express our gratitude to Russ for his time and thoughts, as we feel that healthy competition benefits both us and the industry as a whole.


We’ve made significant progress with our backlink database, and although it’s satisfying to look at the statistics and pat ourselves on the back, it’s clear that it’s not all about the numbers.

The quantity of data does not always imply the quality of the data, and we are working hard to keep our database up to date and useful.
